Why haven't the dams in Irbid and Ajloun governorates filled up?
I will try to answer scientifically:
The last rainy season, 2024/25, was exceptionally dry, with rainfall amounting to less than 40% of the annual average. Consequently, the three environmental elements—water, soil, and vegetation—suffered from severe drought.
The current rainy season 2025/26 AD has so far seen Irbid Governorate experience three weather depressions and several instances of atmospheric instability, with rainfall amounts reaching about 40% of the general annual average of 450 millimeters in 12 rainy days.
Effective surface runoff requires a low-pressure system that lasts for more than three consecutive days, in addition to the soil being saturated with water from previous rains.
The drying up of the (formerly) perennial flowing valleys and the drying up of the water springs and the springs that are linked to the dams.
The density of vegetation and forest cover in most of the surface water supply areas in the governorate and the reclamation of many lands through the construction of stone terraces along the course of valleys and tributaries to prevent soil erosion and store rainwater to increase the moisture of agricultural soil.
